The Ultimate Chicago Bucket List for New Renters

So you just signed a lease in Chicago, congratulations! Whether you're moving in from out of state or just crossing the city for the first time, there's a lot to explore once the boxes are unpacked. Here's your go-to bucket list for making the most of your first year as a Chicagoan.

1. Walk (or Bike) the Lakefront Trail

Chicago's 18-mile lakefront path is one of the city's best free amenities. Grab a bike, go for a run, or just take a slow walk along Lake Michigan; on a clear day, the skyline views alone are worth it.

2. See the Skyline From the Water

Speaking of the skyline, a Chicago Architecture Center river cruise is one of the best ways to actually understand the city you now live in. You'll learn the stories behind the buildings you pass every day on your commute.

3. Visit "The Bean"

Yes, it's touristy. Yes, you should still go. Cloud Gate in Millennium Park is one of the most photographed spots in the country, and it's right in your backyard now.

4. Explore Your Own Neighborhood First

Before you venture citywide, get to know what's actually around your building: the closest coffee shop, the best pizza spot, the local hardware store. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, and yours has its own personality worth discovering early.

5. Catch a Game (Any Game)

Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, take your pick. Chicago sports culture runs deep, and going to at least one live game is basically a rite of passage for new residents.

6. Eat Deep Dish (But Also Don't Stop There)

Deep dish pizza is the obvious pick, but Chicago's food scene goes way beyond it: Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago-style hot dogs, incredible ethnic food across dozens of neighborhoods. Make a list and start working through it.

7. Spend a Free Day at the Museums

Many of Chicago's biggest museums, like the Art Institute, the Field Museum, and the Museum of Science and Industry, offer free or discounted admission days for Illinois residents. Keep an eye out and take advantage.

8. Check Out What's New

Chicago keeps growing, and 2026 is bringing some genuinely exciting additions worth putting on your radar, including the long-anticipated Obama Presidential Center opening in Hyde Park. New openings like this are a great excuse to explore parts of the city you might not otherwise have a reason to visit.

9. Ride the 606 or Explore a Forest Preserve

If you want green space without leaving the city, the 606 elevated trail on the Northwest Side is a great option. Prefer something quieter? Chicago's forest preserves offer an easy escape without needing a car trip out of the city.

10. Experience a Chicago Festival

From neighborhood street fests in the summer to holiday markets in the winter, Chicago's festival calendar runs almost year-round. Pick a weekend, pick a festival, and go soak in the local culture.

The Bottom Line

Living in Chicago means having an entire city's worth of experiences at your doorstep. You don't have to check everything off this list in your first month, but keeping it handy is a great way to make the most of your first year here.
